What Is Changing at Ottawa's Biggest Shopping Destinations
Rideau Street after the Bay
Hudson's Bay closed every store on June 1, 2025, leaving its five-storey, 335,000-square-foot flagship across from Rideau Centre empty. The building's exterior, the old Freiman's department store, was heritage-protected in 2024. As of May 2026, a sale to a company linked to Claridge Homes was in the works, according to CTV News Ottawa.
ByWard Market's bicentennial push
City council approved a revitalization framework on March 11, 2026. It plans to turn the market building at 55 ByWard Market Square into a food-focused civic anchor and create a York Street plaza, and William Street is being rebuilt this year, ahead of the market's 200th anniversary in 2027. Lansdowne 2.0
Council approved the plan in November 2025. A new event centre for 6,600 hockey fans and more than 7,000 concertgoers is being built through 2028, new north-side stands follow, and a retail podium with two residential towers is scheduled to start in 2031. Sparks Street
Work has started on a public realm plan first proposed in 2019. For summer 2026, the block between Kent and Lyon is getting 13 murals representing each province and territory, and Metcalfe Plaza is returning.
